A cycle of 32 poems ruminates on a year of driving with Bach's "Goldberg Variations" playing in my car.

Variation 4

Climb into the machine

lift open silent hinges

its harp shaped dark

carriage of echoing wood

hundred lacquered layers smooth

key action pitched

to strings tuned

to hammers tempered

lift and fall

drumming

the engine starts

every move

a sound

chord change

peddle down

down the avenue through

architecture of sound

into rush hour

stop go

on-coming traffic

built for speed

to carry

music

of motion

on high
