Sculpture
Bronze, 11" x 11" x 5"
This piece is a model for a series of
gates, large outdoor installations,
inspired by the Underground
Railroad sites in Ann Arbor and
Ypsilanti.

"Sojourner Truth" has a green
patina on the flat surfaces while the
edges are polished to a bright
bronze to accentuate the curving
line.

Participatory Spaces
I became more interested in making participatory spaces, where viewers
enter into a space and make their own experience. Like the
Sun Dragon
that invited kids to play in a shower warmed by the sun, these small
sculptures were ideas for much larger pieces that people could walk
through.
Sojourner Truth was one of a series of gates conceived as a
testement to the Underground Railroad in Washtenaw County. This idea
resurfaced 2 years later using the medium of cut up
cotton T shirts.

The fluid motion of the assembly line made it possible to combine
the flexibility of human beings and the power of machinery. It
became the backbone of industries, around which whole cities and
states were built. This group of sculptures celebrates that culture.
