The horrific events of 9/11 and the
chaos that followed led me to make
these paintings. Each painting dealt
with one aspect of the event, to help
untangle the levels of shock and
sadness of the incomprehensible act.

Method
They started with a circular
grid, like a radar screen or the
marks of longitude and
latitude of a global map.
These were drawn in oil stick.
The 2 towers were created by
using a mask to cover the
paper, so they would appear
as empty space. Everything
else was painted over this in
watercolor or pasted collage.
The oil stick resisted the paint
to show through the layers.
The space left where the
towers were was defined only
by what was painted over and
around them.
